2. He played left field and first base on slow-pitch softball teams in Seattle.

3. A Democrat, he ran for Washington state attorney general in 1980, losing in the Reagan landslide.

4. He worked in William Gates Sr.'s law firm before working at Bill Gates Jr.'s software company - and rejoined Preston Gates & Ellis after retiring from Microsoft in 2002.
