ROOKIE RELIEVER RETIRES ALL NINE BATTERS HE FACES
LOS ANGELES — Most players who go to winter ball receive the fringe benefit of white-sand beaches. Sergio Romo's fringe benefit will be sleeping at his parents' house.
The right-hander signed a deal to play for the Mexicali Aguilas, just a 40-minute drive across the border from his hometown of Brawley in Imperial County, Calif.
"I'll work on my change-up, staying aggressive and staying in the swing of things,'' Romo said. "I'm going there as a set-up man in the hopes of competing for that job here next year.''
Romo (3-1) made a compelling case Sunday, retiring all nine batters he faced to earn the decision in the Giants' 1-0, 11-inning victory at Dodger Stadium.
Romo struck out Manny Ramirez on three pitches, darting a fastball, locating a tight slider and then dropping down for a frisbee slider that spun away from the MVP candidate's swing.
Of all the rookie relievers the Giants have introduced this season, Romo has been the most impressive. But he isn't taking a spot in the club's 2009 bullpen for granted.
"The key is to throw strikes, and I'm not perfect at that,'' Romo said. "I know most guys won't figure you out after a couple of at-bats. So before I get comfortable, I have to establish myself. I feel I still have a way to go to reach that level.''
This guy has the position on the Bear's 2009 Giants team already. I am impressed!:beerbang:
